What are everyone's opinions on swapping the IRS out for a solid?

Do you think it hurts the value?

ok think about it like this....... a Cobra was ment to have IRS. would you buy one that had a solid axle swap??? would the average consumer buy one with the swap???

IMO...... i hate when people do that. they make better and stronger parts now for the IRS to prevent breaking axles. and if you want to do a swap.... then go buy a solid axle car then and stop destroying the Cobra's :marc:

Unless drag racing is your primery goal for your car the IRS is better for eveything else. I woulld trade my built rear for a IRS except I am tired of doing large mods.

what do you cosider an average comsumer ? you might have some people out there that just want one and know nothing about it and probably dont care what kind of suspension it has. they just want to say i have a Cobra.

mostly good points, but you also have to remember that Ford ditched the IRS for the new Shelbys....what does that tell you
and as far as building the IRS goes, its far cheaper and easier to buy a built 8.8 and bolt it in

They only did that to save money on the Shelbys (they had a target price), I remember when they came out the powers that be were very disipointed in that they did not have IRS.

I would prefer to have an IRS, as I wouldn't be flogging my car at the dragstrip all the time. Unfortunately, Ford's IRS isn't the strongest on the market. A C5 can run the 1/4 mile in 10 seconds with the stock IRS, yet Ford has problems running 12's.

could have sworn that was one of the things that was part of C.S. agreeement to signoff on the car was no IRS. i know i read that in some right up when it was still a Condor...

being that you have a thread about drift tires. im to an IRS with all the band-aides will be your best bet.

When I had the IRS I broke nothing and went 10.88

I went 10.53 on the solid axle and broke everyting in the rear end.

They also ditched the IRS for weight reasons. The Shelby already weights a "ton", imagine bolting up an IRS to a heavy pig. They wouldn't be able to sell them just because of all the lighter sport cars out there.

I don't race my 99 but that is one of the things that I liked about the car.. Love the way the exhaust looks on an IRS car..
