with the escalating fuel prices and the desire to keep my stang as pristine as possible, I've come to the conclusion that I need to invest in a daily driver to go back and forth to work. I'm thinking an older Honda or Nissan - something 4 cylinder. An older Ranger or S10 would be my first choice but I don't seem to be able to find anything in my price range <1500.

not a bad option, but I don't think it's going to get the kind of gas mileage I'd like - hoping for 25mpg - is that possible?

not in the city. maybe the highway tho. dont follow the V6 stangs so idk the MPG.

Looking forward to those recommendations. This is proving to be a little more difficult that I thought. I'm in Albuquerque this week and had a couple of hours to kill so I went to a bunch of used car dealers looking for stuff. I saw a Honda that looked like it might fit the bill. Mechanically, I think it was ok. Body wise it was a piece. They had fabricated a hood out of sheetmetal. Whoever did this also thought enough to include a scoop, also made of some thin type of sheetmetal. I wish I had my camera:duh:
They had a few total pieces of crap but they seemed totally disinterested in selling me a car for cash. Most of their inventory was late model, nicer cars. We had to go to the back of the lot to find the beauties I was looking for. So I'm in their office ready to write them a check and they don't seem to motivated to sell me something. We'll see.

I hear ya man. I was in the same position. I drive about 900 miles a week between college and work. (with 4.10 gears) that crap wasn't working out to well, as you can imagine. So I bought a 94 Ranger 2.3L 5 speed off a good friend for 700 dollars. The little truck has run like a champ since i bought it and works perfect as my daily driver. I completely understand where your coming from. Hope you find what your looking for.

good luck with your search. I've found some possibilities on the green sheet. Going by tonite to look at a tercel. Went to see a 94 BMW. The registration from the windshield was 2003 Louisiana. I don't know what hoops I'd have to jump through to get it registered here in Texas. She was pretty - pretty ugly - but otherwise might have worked out for me.

See if you can find an Escort. My wife has one and she drives it constantly. She has a 1999 model as long as you keep an eye on your oil(keep it changed when needed) the car will last a long time hers is closing in on 200,000 miles. Oh yeah its great on gas.

I have a deal pending for a 92 Toyota Corolla with 140K miles. I can here the cv joint when I turn really far to the right. Other than that everything seems OK with the car. He wants 1500 which I think is a little high. What do you guys think?

you might also look at Hyundai Accents.....01-04's can be had for that range, mpg in the 30's and 40's and good reliability. Don't get the older Hyundai's, like Excel's.....quality wasn't good back then......
if it's just for you to commute, look for CRX's also.....ones that haven't been riced are harder to find, but they are out there. I saw several last year when I was looking around in the price range you mentioned......nice peppy little cars, and 30-40's for mpg....

for the best deal, look for cars from individuals, not dealers.....

I had a 92 ford ranger when I was 14-17 years old. 2.3L 5spd single cab. I drove the living hell out of that thing, literally beat it to death every chance I got, and the lowest mileage I EVER got was 19mpg. Could easily get about 28-30 if I drove it easy. Even later on when it started using a bit of oil, that dude still ran strong. Super-fun for being a 92hp truck. I've seen alot of them sell for under 1500.

Depending on what kind of driving you are doing, you can get pretty good gas mileage with a domestic. I have a 93 Probe SE, I get 33-34mpg on the highway, and 28-29mpg in town, but I shift at no higher than 2500rpm, and I don't go over 70mph. It's a 2.0L 5spd, with 218k miles on it. My problem is, I just don't drive the damn thing anymore, as my wife and I commute together, because we work at the same place, with roughly the same schedule. But I've got it for sale for $750.
I get 25mpg in the Mustang on the highway ;).

Got it!!!! 1990 Accord LX with 130K miles for 1400. Not the crappy dx - this is the super cool ex. No AC? no problem!!! I got some work to on this bad boy with limited knowledge. The compressor is gone and I need to get another one. Original stereo is still in the car - only one speaker works. That's gonna drive me crazy, but if the thing runs, I ain't complaining.
