Turning of CEL when removing EGR valve

My 91 coupe has a bad EGR valve....I'd just as soon remove it and cap off the pipe, but I don't want to suffer the bad gas mileage that comes with the computer reading it as "not opening" and changing the settings. My gas mileage is down about 6-8 mpg from what it should be, based on my experience with similar cars. It's a 4 cyl auto....
Anyone know if there is a way to turn off the light and code if I just remove the EGR valve?

Thanks Hugo!! Do you know if it will work on a 4 cyl? I don't know if the EVPs are the same or not.....
