ok here it goes for a diagnosis 72 stang holly 650 dubble pumper and petronix ignition and coil well i was driving today and it started acting odd and of all things smelled diffrent. here it goes was going 40ish i felt it jolt a few times so i looked at vaccume and oil presure gauges they didnt move from normal place then looked at rpm and it was spikeing all over the place going from my average of about 2200 rpm at like 45 down to 200 rpm up to 1500 and then it droped to nothin and died and after i poped it in neutral it cranked back up by it self and died after that but it cranks fine and when i start it and at idle its fine kinda bc i noticed the rpm meter jumps a bit at idle now that it happend so i got me a new coil thinking hey i know the problem a 4 year old coil nope i was dumb same **** so im thinkin that petronix ignition under the distrib maybe, its puting gas in the inake so i dont think a carb issue but it has back fired do to the car dieing like it did before so maybe the diafram is about to go but wouldnt cause this problem to just spike and die and it does it after i drive about 10 miles or so warmed up and now its starting to do it at any speed i have a little valve clatter but i dont think that would be a problem its not loud and obnoxis just quiet and suttle im thinkg a spark issue checked battery its fully charged did idiot test on neg battery cable for alt its fine so im at a loss and nows not the best time to have crap break kinda low on the funds i can afford a new petronix II ignition and coil but dont want to get it if its not the problem and dont got a volt meter and even if i did wouldnt know what to do with it so any help at all here guy and gals or if ya want gimme a call 210 649-7806 ill be up all night swearing at it and being angry so... thank a lot for help guys and gals :40oz:

edit: sorry kinda long needed to vent and SORRY for spelling and periods and comas and things ya i went to college and just learned how do drink beer thanks UTSA

idk much when it comes to ignitions and things like that. but if it is the problem, you should switch to a MSD. but if the timing is off tho, it'll cause all different sorts of problems. if it didnt have an idol problem, then id say it was the ignition. hopefully Joe or someone else can chime in on this.

the only one id go with other than msd is petronix bc i had a mallory POS before and never again every 3 months that damn 200 dollar box went out for no reason i even took it to a rep and thay said it was odd that this is happening and it was installed correctley i do like msd but $$ this month has been short comeing for car mods bills and **** like that come first for me so... i to am lost on electrical more that 2 wires and im confused thats why i chose petronix easy to install and well.. idiot proof that means i can install it i tryed a msd on a friends car and i couldnt figure it out again thanks for input HELP ME HELP ME oh i feel so sad i cant figure it out

the one way to check spark is to pull each boot one at a time and try to ground it to something metal (like a bolt) you can only do it in the dark so you can see the spark and see how strong it is.. other then that, timing is the only thing I could think of right now, and until yuo check that, diagnosing anything else would be pointless.. one thing you could do is start the car and try to adjust the timing a little in each direction and see if it acts better.. How many miles are on the timing chain you have in the car now?

ebay.. or some of the racing sites classifieds like hardcore50.com, corral.net, racepages etc.. they ussually have good deals on ignitions because people upgrade.

oh damn i think on the chain........round about 50k-55k i think i checked spark but like before is fine at idle just when a load on engin and goin 35 ish 40...................:( ya new coil and igniton will run me like 130 not bad at all so i can pick that up easy

it could have stretched and jumped a tooth.. as far as load, have someone put it in gear, (while standing on the brakes) and try to drive, it should put enough laod on it to check the spark without the car taking off.

take it for a quick ride and see if it helped any. once you get your timing light check and reset the timing.. do you know what it was set at prior?

falloutman2
11-14-2007, 12:06 AM

All I know is it's a pete jackson gear drive.. came out of a 92 302 block.

As for the lights, check every single ground you can find.. unscrew or bolt them and clean the contact area, and scrap it a little for better contact.. (easiest thing to do first)

if the wire is burned, you might have a short somewhere.. and I can't help with that as I farm out electrical gremlins to my freind.lol! He loves chasing the bastards down, I personally don't have the patience..

falloutman2
11-14-2007, 10:59 PM
ya was thinkin the same thing but it looked like that little burn mark had been there for about 20 years so signs of new wear so was thinkin groind wires as what you said and i dont think it will hurt anything to replace a porton of that wire

speedfreak87
11-14-2007, 11:01 PM
nope, just do it right with solder and heat shrink..

well that seemed to do it with new wires... timeing was off just a hair and front bowl was a little low and driverside was a little rich but i fixed all that seemes to run a whole bunch better............ that was really odd
