How would a person modify the mileage reading in a newer Stang with electronic odometer? I looked at an 02 recently that was a pretty good deal, with great mileage, but the carfax showed almost 50k more miles than was on the odometer. I've been told in the past that it is virtually impossible to alter the odometer reading, so how would a person be able to do this, and would there be any signs of it outside the carfax/registration records?

it can be done. its very hard. i dont care what anyone else says, it CAN be done, now how.... i dont know. there are ways. and there should be signs because it is an electronic reading. i only know this because i had a friend who worked at a ford dealer.
im sure soomeone else will chime in for more details.

like dean said it can be done, i have been told so already. all you have to have is a laptop and the right adapter to be able to acces the PCM, the dealerships have these. so if they got them i bet someone on the outside does too.

It could have had a cluster swap at some point, I believe they hold the mileage of the car they are removed from and are a PIA to be reset.

It's really easy actually. As mentioned you simply to a cluster swap. The mother board is held in by a few screws in the cluster which is the brain. I bought a friends autometer cluster for my 02 GT and he gave me his brain since it was a race car. It had like 67,000 miles on it and I only had like 47000. I should have put it in my car till I was ready to sale or trade it..but thats dishonest..ha ha-Shane

Guess it's not as hard to reset the mileage as the new model. I wanted to get the upgrade cluster, but it has to go to the dealer to be reset.....no thanks!

So all you gotta do is swap the cluster, or the brain from another cluster? Wow, was I misinformed....LOL
Wonder if the V6 brain is the same...a quick search revealed lots of them on Ebay with very low miles....

As far as I know thats its. When he gave me his I accidently put his in the cluster instead of mine and the car read a his mileage. So that tells me it is that simple. You would think it would be harder but it doesnt seem so.-Shane
That's one thing about programmable devices(and we all enjoy them so much because we can change so many parameters on our engines to influence timing, mixture and so on). This accessability is easy to duplicate with handheld scanners or laptops and many of the connections are standardized so almost anyone can access them. Yes, that can be scary, but nowadays with computerized records of car maintenance it should become apparent if such a change would have been done. So a bit of research on a particular car and it's vin is essential.
