My 06 GT has SLP LMs, which is basically Zero muffler only being quieted by the cats.... Now onto my question (you thought I posted this in the wrong forum at first....didn't you)
Question: My son's 88GT has Magnaflow mufflers, but they're too quiet for my son's taste as well as mine. Is it legal in Texas to simply remove the mufflers and go straight pipe, just letting the cats do some of the natural muffing of sound? If so, what are the risks involved in doing this? For example, a lot of my buddies would run straight pipe back in the day before cats existed, and I remember some stories about guys popping valves due to the cold air being sucked back up into the hot cylinders. I would think the cats would insulate this for the most part, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I guess, that depends, some people hate SLPs, but I love em and they're pretty much straight pipe with resonators to drown out some of the drone. Besides, my son is 18.... who cares about drone when your 18 right?

You need back pressure. running straight pipes I beleive is illegal no matter what state your in.
There are alot of types/brand of mufflers out there that can satisfy his loud needs.
I had a 2-1/2 mac catback on my 87 and it was loud, my parents could hear me coming about two blocks away. that was with the stock h-pipe.
I'm running long tubes, custom x-pipe and spintech race mufflers with dumps on my coupe and I'm sure it will wake up the dead.
here's a video of a coupe (not mine) with spintechs.
