I have a question. My motor drags when it starts after it has been running. It actually sounds like the starter is what is dragging. I don't have any insulation around my starter, would it make the starter drag if it gets too hot? If so what would ya'll recommend to put around the starter to insulate it? This is my first guess as what it could be. It is a new starter that has only been in for a few months and starts ok while it is cool.

If you mean by draging that it cranks over slow when your starting it? If so Check your ground cables you have one from the battery to the motor make sure there is no corrosion on ether end and that it has good metal contact points. Also you should have a ground from the motor to the body of the car. Same with that one make sure there is good contact and no corrosion.

Could be a bad ground.
What is your timing at? Too much timing can cause slow start.

check all your grounds, and replace if need be.. my 87gt did that to me, I replaced the starter 9thinking that's what it was) drove the car, cause YAY IT WAS FIXED! yeah it wasn't.. so I cleaned the grounds and it never did it again.

Thanks guys, I looked at my wires to the battery and where they go and the ends before the terminals and ends are showing the cable inside the rubber insulation. I need to get some new battery cables I couldn't see any corrosion and has good connections but I don't know if the frayed cables would result in the slow turning over like you described Larry. I starts great when cold but after it runs for a few minutes and gets warm, it really has a lot of trouble starting but I will try replacing the cables.

+1 on the timing had it happen a few times. Cranks over fine when cold drags when hot.

I have no idea, I have an old timing gun but never checked the timing. Thanks I will have to check that, I don't know what the car is supposed to be set at though.

For a N/A car for daily use I would set it between 12 to 17.
Check the following:
1) Battery Cables (Positive & Negative Cables)
2) Engine Grounds
3) Timing
4) Starter (you can usually take it off and have it checked at your local auto parts store for free. They will put load to it and see if it is just going out)
If you are going to change it out what we suggest is upgrading to a high torque starter. This is what came stock in all 1992 and later Mustang LX and GT's. Then turn your old back in as a core on a later date so they don't ding you for turning in a different starter.
