I just changed a 4-banger to carbed 302.
I am not planning on running the heater, or A/C. I went to AutoZone and got one of the caps that covers the port in the top of the water pump. So far, I have had two that have blown apart. This is the rubber cap that goes over the port tubing, and then, you apply a hose clamp. Fortunately, both have given out right after I shut the car off, and not while driving.
As I understand it, there are some out there that work really well, and I can only assume they have to. Don't know of many race cars running a 302 with heat and A/C.
Does anyone know what that part is called, and where I can get a very good quality one? Thanks in advance.

*UPDATE* ISSUE RESOLVED
I purchased a heater adapter from Advanced Auto, along with 1 foot of 3/4" heater hose. I ran the hose from the port on the water pump to the port on the heater adapter, and, that seems to have been the resolution to the problem.
Most responses I have gotten, here and elsewhere, lean toward the caps that I purchased just being close to dry rotted, due to the infrequency of them being purchased, and sitting around warehouses and stores for long periods.

Thanks for all the help and input! :mick:

Every one of those rubber caps I have ever tried has rotted and cracked. Never had one pop off though. I bypassed my heater core by leaving the metal heater tubes in place and getting a U shaped hose from autozone. Here is a pic. If you think you want to try this I will look up the p/n for ya and post up.

Thanks, Copper. We were going to try that, but, the problem is the way the carb sits, the metal lines on the piece you are talking about, won't fit.

Yeah, I'll try and get pics up on Tuesday. I'll be at work from 9am to midnight, so, won't be able to get them sooner.
And...we thought about welding it shut. We were, however, told that was a bad idea. Though, not for any particular reason

I used a whole plug and it has worked for 4 years now. It is just a peice of rubber with a bolt through it with a nut at the top. Stick it in the hole and tighten the nut down it spreads the rubber out in the whole. You should be able to get one at any store for a couple of bucks. I had the same problem with caps they kept blowing off.

Those caps will not hold b/c your not letting the coolant flow. You best bet is to do what Copperpony said this bypasses the heater core but still lets the coolant flow so the pressure is not so high. Or you can weld it using a freeze plug that will fit or use the temp freeze plug that will fit that size. :mick:

the issue with the metal heater hoses is not his carb, its the distrubuter, the base is to large, and if i weld it shut, it might void the LTW on it

this one is the part of the water pump

This may be your best bet then if you can find one.

Either than or a length of heater hose (you know this is designed to work with the fluid and heat of the cooling system) and a bolt that fits tightly into it. Run the length of hose, put a little RTV on the threads of the bolt. Force it in place and hose clamp it.
