Planning on changing the gears in my 96 gt but having trouble deciding between 3.55 or 3.73. I know 3.73 would be the better but I was hoping to get some input on how 3.73 does at highway speeds 55 and up.

The age old question....which gear??? The age old answer...Don't fear the gear!

If i were you, I'd go 373s all the way...I doubt you will regret it. Besides, not gonna see TOO much of a difference in RPMs, but it's always better to go big!

Ok, on the flip side...I sorta wish I had gone 355's in my LX....I get SH!T for gas mileage, and driving on base sucks because the RPM is right at shift point and NOT low enough to sustain a smooth, lower MPH drive. I think 355's would have given me an easier drive.

But I'd have still have to say 373s....for yours.

go .410's !!!! I get like 260 Miles on a tank and at 70 MPH my rpm's are at 2300 .... You will love the .410's ... that is unless you do alot of around town driving ... you just have to remember to keep your foot out of it ... you will love the new torque ... :)

Otherwise, go with the .373's ...

.410 is little extreme for me. :) maybe if i was running the strip more and had more foot control :evil_lol: do alot of in town and highway so dont want it runnin 4000 at 60.. :banghead: the stock gears are killin me though. got to have something stronger soon lol :pullhair:

Very nice! I'm lucky to get that on a tank with mine. Blah! That's why it sits here most of the time. :snicker:

I am Dyno Tuned and I get 260 a tank ... :):):) Its amazing what a tune can do for your gas mileage and your performance ... :):):)

And for the record, you wont be at 4000 rpms at 60 ... at 60 you will be around 1700 rpms in 5th gear ... :mick:

dang thats very nice gas mileage. sorry for inexperience w/ gears. still learnin some. :) how low would you go before you really bring the top end down?

how low would you go before you really bring the top end down?

Do you mean how high ???? For a Naturally Aspirated Motor without any work done internally, I would not go over .430's .....

Do you have plans to run a s/c at a later date ?? If so, then stay with the .373 ... I currently have the .410's on my N/A GT and I am running 12.90's in San Antonio .. atleast that was with a bad rearend at the time ... she is all fixed and going to the track in the next week or two ... hopefully I will be in the 12.80's or better yet, 12.70's (that would be nice) ...

If you go with the .410's .. trust me, you wont regret it (power/torque wise that is).

When I ran the .373's .. I liked them alot .. but then I blew them at Fun Ford 2005 and decided to go with the .410's this time .. so far I love them ...

Oh yeah, and spend the money on Ford Racing Performance Parts .. dont go with that cheap ass crap stay with FRPP!!!!!

Bulldog's 100% right!! That's what I got and I average the same milage. For any 4.6 motor the 410's really wake up the torque!!!

Although you will be happy with the 373's, 410's are optimal for a mod motor.. they have to rev higher to make power. but you should be happy. :mick:

I have 4.10s in combination with a Vortech-blown engine and I average around 17.1 mpg when not jumping on it...Now, these gears are Motive gears and they do whine a bit around 60 mph, which might be annoying if my exhaust wasn't so damn super-sexy, loud, and somewhat intimidating :mick: ...My understanding is that Motive gears normally whine and Ford Performance gears do not...yeah whatever - F' it!!

If you have an auto go ahead with the 3.73...if you have a 5 speed get the 4.10. The 3.55 is for grannies and turbo cars

Ditto on the 4.10's...that is what I run. As one poster said, dont fear the gear for sure!

If you are worried about the RPM's either drive slower on the freeway or go with a T56. If you supercharge or TC later one you may have a problem with busting the tires loose because of the mechanical advantage of the lower gears, but the top end will still offer nice gas mileage. I know a stang owner in Germany who drives 4.30's and with his T56 still gets less than 2K rpm's on the autobahn doing 80mph. Of course, he rarely goes that slow, but it still is an option. You should just think about what you plan on doing to your car down the road. I say 4.10 or deeper for the mod motors.

In your 1-1 ratio it will mean at 70mph your RPM is 3550 or 3730. Practically no difference. Taller is better.

I run 4.11's and got 23mpg in mine (although I do have the 6th gear)

I did 3.73. 3.55 wouldnt be anything worth waisting your time and money on. most people will do 4.10's though. If you wan to race this car go 4.10's

Just do like im doing.. go with 3.90's ... its a little more gear for a easier shift point at town driving... plus its not to big of a jump to your 4.10 bro. So.. Yeah 3.90's ftw

I had 3.73 before in a 97 gt, wasnt bad at all on cruising. If you want to really notice them you will need atleast 3.73, good luck

well he already bought 3.73 my mom even said (yes mother knows best damnit) that 3.90's are the way to go.. better gas than 4.10s but better preformance especially over 3.27's its ftw tyvm =D

I have 3.55's in both of my cars and like them a lot. I like 3.73's as well but both rearends came with the 3.55's and I wasn't going to change them. They are awesome on the highway, but 3.73's aren't bad for highway driving either. The 3.73's will cause the engine to rev a little higher.

Good info---so what is a reasonable price for someone to install gears?

96gtpony
01-20-2008, 01:04 AM
I just paid 175 for mine. Thats with changing out all bearings also.

MichaelsLilGray
01-20-2008, 09:31 AM
thats about a base price. If you live in texas, i would have told you to go to arlington. We have a guy on US that installs them for right at 175. he will show up im sure of it =D

shadow04
01-21-2008, 12:08 AM
Well Arlington's good news since I live in DFW. 175 is cheaper than the $500 someone told me about this weekend....i thought that was a crazy price....

Bulldog Stang
01-21-2008, 02:45 AM
was $500 with the purchase of the gears or just the install ??? Avg. price per hour in a shop is $65 - 75/hr .. the book says it is an 8 hr. job (i think) so thats where the $500 came from ...

I install them for people in the Victoria area for $150 .. $100 for me and a $50 shop/tool/lift fee that I pay a friend to use his shop ...

shadow04
01-21-2008, 03:21 PM
That was install price. I would bring him the gears...
