I have a question about painting the brake calipers and the drums. I am guessing there is a special heat treated paint that I need to put on them. Where would I get it and about how much does it cost? Also is it easy to do?

yeah, it has to be heat resistant. Someone was selling some in the classifieds. Its as easy as spray painting.

Thanks Darren, I didn't know it was a spray. Thanks for the info. :mick:

There are Brake caliper paint Kits that are grossly overpriced available, however, use can use high temp engine enamel in the color your your choosing. Much cheaper. Comes in spray cans which is easy to use. I would also suggest a primer such as Rustolium primer meant for rusty surfaces.

It can be spray or brush on. DupliColor makes a kit especially for calipers, generally available in AuotZone, OReilly's etc in Red or Black. I used it on my calipers on an '06. Fairly easy, brush takes less prep and dont have to go to much 'protection' extent as with spraying (protecting from overspray).

If I were to do it again, I'd prolly by all new calipers, and send em off for powder coat ;-). and be done with it.

I have been considering painting mine either red or black.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I really like the powder coating idea but way out of my price range right now. I don't know what color to go with as my stang is blue. I may go with a blue or maybe even go with the red, but not quite sure. I may even try to get a little fancy and stencil a mustang on there.

whichever way you go, don't forget to put a couple of coats of clear enamel, they will last longer and be easier to clean.

heres an idea, it makes everything look pretty nice...get your high temp paint and then see if duplicolor has a matching Metal Cast color. if it does, spray your high temp color and then when it dries a little spray over the metal cast. it looks pretty cool, kinda like a candy appled color, if you could say. thats what i did with my engine block and pulleys

About to do mine from beginning to end. I DO NOT like the kits where you brush it on. The end result is uglyyyyy. I will take some pics and do a quick article on it. But here is a few pics of a black Cobra I did a year ago for a friend. Use the high temp primer, paint but NOT THE DUPLICOLOR high temp clear. It leaves a milky coat. Remember that a clean surface is crucial. Brake cleaner and some wire wheeling will be in order-Shane

I have done both the Mach and before the Cobra, and I used the caliper spray available at Pep boys for $5.99 a can. I used brake cleaner and a wire brush first, then 3-4 light coats of paint. They both turned out great, and after 2 years on the Mach and 22k miles, still look good. They are easy to clean(just hose off) and hold up well.

I really liked the idea that you did on the engine. I like that color, it would almost go with my stang. I may just have to sit down and spend some time working on this in 2 days or so.

Agreed. Haven't done mine yet, but am thinking about it. I picked up a can of caliper paint from Advance Auto for about $7. Not the whole kit. I think they wanted about $20-25.

yepp i painted my calipers red and its pretty much about 7 dollars a can at autozone but the kid liked me so he gave me his discount so i only paid 1.50 lol. anyway, i sanded off all the rust and then just put several coats on them. take the time to take them off of the car though because i didnt so there are some spots that i missed. its worth it to take them off

I've done this about 20 times now. Did them ALOT for friends cause well, I do a great job!:happydanc When I first started I use to take them off the car all the way, even the brake lines. When it came time to assemble it was was easy to mess up the paint job as well as when bleeding it will eat the paint rite off. IMO..leave them on, wire wheel, brake cleaner, tape and paint. When painting though do several light coats and not one heavy coat, trust me on that one! If you hit everything you can see when mounted...then thats all anyone else can see, especially with the wheels on. -Shane

ive done this to several of my cars and i havent seen anyone mention this, in my opinion when u do this it ussually comes out a lil bit darker thant youd expect probably because its dark in there so if youre going for a bright color i would go a shade or two even brighter to get the end result you want.

Instead of painting your brake calipers why not go with MGP Caliper Covers. They're an easy alternative to painting and the results last forever.

It's a great idea and sure he will do just fine selling them. Not alot of options for color though. I'll stick to doing my own.-Shane
