Has anyone seen this before? We are pretty shocked to see this kind of damage on Darren's (88GT) engine. It has probably 7,000 or so miles on it since it was rebuilt. Best of all, since we were too busy to rebuild it ourselves we had the mashine shop do it and now we have a cracked block, busted crank, broken timing chain, damaged waterpump and who knows what else. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the heads are ok, but it is too early to tell.

Thats about what I would expect to see. Sorry to see it though. Any warranty from the machine shop?

The mashine shop wants to cover labor only. I think that is a bit stingy considering we will need a new block and much more. We do have an extra block. And we still don't know if the heads are ok. No more energy left to tear into that tonight.

Can you tell if it spun a bearing or not ?

I have a set of E7s you can get if you need them.I
have been toting them in the Honda for a few months.

Damn that sucks!

I would look into taking legal action against the shop.. labor is nothing compared to the cost of that damage.

Darren, I also have a set of e7's that are fresh. I'll let you know tomorrow about the crank.

That's a bummer Darren. An engine rebuild should last more than 7k, and it seems like the problem could be due to poor assembly at the shop. If some things aren't torqued right and clearances aren't double checked, you just have a little time bomb on your hands just waiting for things to wear out and blow up. Hope everything works out.

yeah, they should replace the parts if they didnt do something right. i know if i leave a drain plug loose and it messes up a motor...guess whos gotta buy them an engine.

It looks like your crank "walked". That comes from poor assembly or massive amounts of boost.

Looks like yall got hold of a weak crank or it had the wrong main bearing causing it to be a lil loose or tight.

If that crank has been dropped or fell over then it will cause it to break like that.

Thats kinda what Im thinking. Maybe the timing chain breaking coulda caused it too? Or did that cause the timing chain to break? any idea?

I would think the crank breaking took the chain out not vice-versa.

1 year (Un sure of the milage) and Im with in the 1 year. Guy at the shop said I should be out the door spending about $100. Im not an optimist. I'll feel good if its only 2-300

All I ask, after a $1100+ rebuild is 100k/5 year fairly trouble free ride. Im not hard to please, and I know they will do 100K easy. But there is no way I can do 100K in 5 years, so even 5 years and 50K would satisfy me. I can handle doing this every 5 years. Not every 11 months

No surprises after the tear down done by the shop. Everything we couldnt see before looks to be good and the financial dammages on my part look to be "$100 if that" according to the shop. Yes, one hundred dollars. So it's not a financial set back, its a convenience set back. I have to say, it could have been worse. Much worse. Im glad the shop is standing behind their work, even though I dont think anyone is to blame.

The crank was probably the culprit of the chain breaking. When you get your new crank, take the old bearings and tape them around the journals. Then take a die grinder and one of the green discs and grind off all the casting marks. You dont have to smooth them out just hit them litely to take off the sharpness of the marks. Get a quote to have the crank and rods shot peened. Usually its way cheaper then payin for a forged piece.
