it should, they are factory castings.

but the gt-40p heads came on the explorer from i think '99-'02, and i figured there might be differences in thermactor tubes, if the gt-40p heads even had the provisions for it. maybe that'll help a little more. i know the gt-40x heads from ford racing have the provision, not sure about the p heads though.

honestly, I have P heads and I don't hink it even has the passage.. I can't check right now as the motor is burried in a garage, but if it does have it, it should bolt up.

P head dont have the external emissions holes for the smog pump tubing, unless they have been drilled by a machine shop afterwards.

If you get the p heads you will have to get new headers specially made for the "p" casting. The spark plug holes are different. Id try to find some x castings off a newer explorer

thanks guys.... look like either 1 get rid of the air pump or 2 save up and get the aluminum heads (probably a better idea).

you can find used trkflow and performer heads for 700-800 all day long. i'd do that over buying new headers for poor flowing heads. just my 2 cents

gt-40p's aren't that poor flowing, alot of people use them and run good numbers, and once my car is up and running I'll show you some proof.

no, they arent bad heads but once he bought them for 550 and then chased down special headers for what 2-300? he would have already more time, money and labor in it then he would have if he went with lighter, and better flowing heads for 700-800.
that being said, after having performer heads and intakes i'm already itching to move up to afr's and vic. jr's. :D
be sure to post up those numbers! :blkvnm:

the car has gt-40 headers from ford racing on it, don't know if this makes a difference or not. i do apreciate the posts.... keep 'em up tell me what ya think.

unfortunately, those headers wont work. gt40ps are different from gt40s(and the rest of the heads that dont require special headers). the plug angle requires the headers to be shaped differently in order to make room to get the plugs in and out.
a long time ago i was looking at gt40ps and gt40xs and then realized that there are many other heads out there that are better for the same price(or less if you're talking about ford racing gt40x).
i would look in a different direction.

i was also looking at the twisted wedge, or afr 165's, i'm looking for a max power of 350-400 n/a, so i know i'm gonna need a good set of heads. i need to keep the car emissions legal for colorado, so i can't do anything to wild.

the only way to make those numbers n/a with a 5.0(non-stroker) is with afr's, a vic. jr intake(or some other intake that flows similarly, holley systemaxII or trickflow R-series will also work well) and a custom grind cam. i'd go with comp cams xe274hr roller cam.
no way will twisted wedge heads or performer heads ever yield 350rwhp unless they have some insane porting work done to them. afr's on the otherhand come straight from afr making like 50-60 more hp than twisted wedge and performers.
