My stang went down this weekend. It won't even turn over, and only clicks. I think it may be the starter or solenoid(hope I spelled that right). It is a 93 5.0 and has been good so far, just wanted some opinions from everyone if I am right in guessing my problem. :dunno:

It is a brand new battery, I haven't had the batter but about 2 months.

Even new batteries can be or go bad, I would have it checked still.

make sure you check your cables too, i had a bad cable once and all it did was click too. specialy if its one of the one that are already have the terminals on them, they are bad for going bad where the cable and terminal meet. make sure u also check the starter solenoid with a good one too before buying one.

Chad take the battery down to Snaps and have them check it out ... Let me know if you need help taking the starter out ... once it is taken out we can get it checked at snaps too ... LMK if you need anything ...

Well the battery is good, and the terminals are ok. I replaced the solenoid on the firewall and that did not help or fix the problem. I spent 4 hours today trying to get the starter out as I had no luck since the side bolt that needs to come out is located between the shorty headers and the block and could not get to it. I took it to a shop to put it up on the lift and have to wait to morning so I can mess with it. Thanks for the offer Bryan but I took it to Dynasty to get the car on the lift. I am going to have the starter checked in the morning. Well wish me luck... :mick: Thanks for the help guys!!! :mick:

A bit late now, but I found that removing the right front wheel and going through the K member to access that one bolt is a whole lot easier. Hope it dont cost too much to fix.

If your keeping the car for any length of time, it wont be the last starter you replace. Fords are notorious for starter problems. My 72 went through 1 every 6 months RELIGOUSLY give or take a week or 2. Fortunately I could change it with nothing but a 1/2" box wrench in 20 minuites and didn't even have to jack it up. The 88 seems to be better. Perhaps 1 a year. Havent had it that long, but have replaced it more than once.

Ok, here is the outcome. Once the starter was removed and knocked around getting it out, I went and had it tested and it was fine. Checked the battery again and it was fine. Put it all back in and it started right up. I think the solenoid on the starter had gotten stuck. Man talk about feeling like a goober...

older car's have more probs, but that's what makes them fun to own. i love being able to get dirty working on the beast, but that's just me. i had a messed up situation w/ my 89 awhile back i thought the motor seized, but it ended up being the power steering pump. that and the serpentine belt was too tight. these cars will throw all kinds of crazy stuff, but if you love the car you just roll w/ the punches i guess.

Don't get me wrong, I love the car. It just seems lately I can't win for losing. Oh well, s&^$ happens... :mick:

You need to look at buyin a tilton starter. They may look expensive at first, but 2-3 years later when your using the same starter you will be happy. Also header wrap is your friend.

Yeah, the exhaust was very close to the starter on the 72. Starters dont like heat.

Well, I finally went out and got a starter yesterday and got it put in. Those headers make it a booger to get out and in. I am getting ready to order new shocks and struts and 2 new tires. Then it is time to start on the interior of the car...Thanks for the info on the brand of starter to go with. I will look into getting one. :mick:
